I really Enjoyed Sister Cities Park!

Recently my family and I attended the new Sister Cities Park on 18th and the Ben Franklin Parkway. How can I describe it??? Ummm it’s part, waterpark, creek, cafe, all in one. It’s a great spot for the kids, because you can rent toy boats to sail along the creek, or just put your feet in! The cafe is nice, and the prices are just right, the majority of the light treats cost under $10. So if you haven’t visted yet! What are you waiting for?

4th Annual MLK365 Beer Summit on Race Relations ft. Professor Marc Lamont Hill!

So Global Citizens held its 4th Annual Beer Summit to discuss Race Relations in the Obama Era. The beer idea was inspired by  the 2009  arrest of an African-American Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates who was arrested for breaking into his own home by the white Cambridge Police Sergeant James Crowley.   President Obama invited the two men to the White House for a meeting over beer to make sense of the matter. Columbia University Professor and TV commentator Marc Lamont Hill was the guest speaker and Kay Yu, chair of the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations was the moderator at the Reading Terminal.

When dicussing Race in this country it makes all races feel uncomfortable.  Just because we have a black president does not mean that WE ALL JUST GET ALONG.   Professor Hill didn’t tone down his thoughts about race relations in this country. He addressed stereotypes that plague all races and ethnicities, for example people expect all Asians to be good at math. In addition the Trayvon Martin case was discussed, because his case divided our country. What’s interesting is that a lot of whites were in the audience but did not speak, a point that Annette John-Hall of the Inquirer pointed out.  I think that some whites feel intimidated and don’t want to offend blacks or other races, but remaining quiet does not resolve the issues. Hopefully we can all keep the discussion going in a peaceful and respectful way.

All in All it was a great experience and I learned a lot. Oh yeah the Beer was great too! :)

“A Call for Peace” Block Party ft. Trina, Dj Diamond Kuts, and More!

CELEBRITIES, CITY LEADERS & COMMUNITY MEMBERS UNITE FOR 4TH ANNUAL UNITY IN THE COMMUNITY BLOCK PARTY!

FEATURING “STOP THE VIOLENCE” MUSICAL TRIBUTE

WITH SPECIAL GUEST PERFORMANCE & APPEARANCES BY TRINA,

RADIO PERSONALITIES DJ DIAMOND KUTS & UNCLE O,

STATE REPRESENTATIVE KENYATTA JOHNSON,

JORDON HARRIS, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, PHILADELPHIA YOUTH COMMISSION

AND MORE!

The 4rd Annual Unity in the Community Block Party will host its free annual celebration in South Philadelphia at 20th and Snyder Avenue on July 30th, 2011. Produced by Unity in the Community President, Anton Moore, this event is a community day of free food, children’s activities, live entertainment, celebrity appearances, a fashion show and award ceremony, and has become the most anticipated celebration of the summer for residents, neighbors and friends in the area. With a headlining performance by Miami native and hip hop’s proclaimed “baddest chick” Trina, additional guests include Power 99 FM’s DJ Diamond Kuts, Uncle O, State Representative Kenyatta Johnson; Jordan Harris, Executive Director, Philadelphia Youth Commission; and more .

The event aims to empower as well as entertain. There will be an emotional presentation that will shed a dramatic light on the city’s crime epidemic.

This year our event will have a deeper meaning as we declare a critical call to action to the leaders of this city, local celebrities and prominent public figures, to help us mobilize a much needed stop-the-violence movement in our neighborhood,” says Moore.  “What are we doing as citizens to collectively stop the crime in our city? It’s a question I ask my friends and neighbors and I hope this event will raise awareness about this important issue.”

“I’m glad to see so many of us on the same page as it relates to ending youth violence through community action and accountability. This epidemic that’s killing our youth also kills potential, and we have to stop making excuses and start creating solutions,” says State Rep. Kenyatta Johnson.

Just as promised in previous years, children can look forward to a variety of activities from face-painting to moon bounces, fun give-aways, cotton candy and more.  Live entertainment including a musical tribute in honor of R&B legends Michael Jackson and Teena Marie will take place on a main stage.

The Unity in the Community organization held various fundraisers throughout the year to raise money for the celebration. Philadelphia’s Power 99FM is a media partner and other community members have provided their support.

For more information please contact Anton Moore, 215.292.5081.

Man Falsely Accused of Being Kensington Strangler Via Facebook!

Trizz Jeffries was accused of being the Kensington Strangler that has raped and killed 3 women. His photo was placed on Facebook as the Strangler. Jeffries took a DNA test to prove that he was not in any way involved in these horrific crimes. Jeffries faced threats of violence from Facebook.  Social  Networking is a great soure for fun and entertainment, but to accuse an innocent man is awful.  For the full story go to bossip.com. I pray that the real serial killer is off the streets.

What yall think?
