Does Money Talk??? Mayor Nutter $20,000 Bounty!

“Mayor Nutter hopes an aggressive use of cash rewards will prompt more community cooperation with preventing crimes – possibly enough to help stem a homicide rate that has flared to a troubling level this month.

From now on, the city will offer $500 for information leading police to an illegal gun and up to $20,000 for information leading to an arrest in any homicide.

“To every criminal out there: I just put a $20,000 bounty on your head,” Nutter said at a news conference Thursday at Strawberry Mansion High School in North Philadelphia. “We are coming for you. We will find you. People will give up that information.”Source

Philadelphia already has 31 murders for the year, and it’s only January 27. I commend Mayor Nutter for addressing these issues, but It’s not the answer. If citizens speak out will they be protected. That is the bigger issue. I don’t want to go the police for information and risk losing my life, that’s exactly what happened to  Rosemary Fernandez-Rivera who was shot and killed after giving information about a  suspect to Philadelphia dectectives this week. More Police trust and protection is sorely needed. Philly we have got to get it together. Stop the Violence, PLEASE.

The 4rd Annual Unity in the Community Block Party will host its free annual celebration in South Philadelphia at 20th and Snyder Avenue on July 30th, 2011. Produced by Unity in the Community President, Anton Moore, this event is a community day of free food, children’s activities, live entertainment, celebrity appearances, a fashion show and award ceremony, and has become the most anticipated celebration of the summer for residents, neighbors and friends in the area. With a headlining performance by Miami native and hip hop’s proclaimed “baddest chick” Trina, additional guests include Power 99 FM’s DJ Diamond Kuts, Uncle O, State Representative Kenyatta Johnson; Jordan Harris, Executive Director, Philadelphia Youth Commission; and more .

The event aims to empower as well as entertain. There will be an emotional presentation that will shed a dramatic light on the city’s crime epidemic.

This year our event will have a deeper meaning as we declare a critical call to action to the leaders of this city, local celebrities and prominent public figures, to help us mobilize a much needed stop-the-violence movement in our neighborhood,” says Moore.  “What are we doing as citizens to collectively stop the crime in our city? It’s a question I ask my friends and neighbors and I hope this event will raise awareness about this important issue.”

“I’m glad to see so many of us on the same page as it relates to ending youth violence through community action and accountability. This epidemic that’s killing our youth also kills potential, and we have to stop making excuses and start creating solutions,” says State Rep. Kenyatta Johnson.

Just as promised in previous years, children can look forward to a variety of activities from face-painting to moon bounces, fun give-aways, cotton candy and more.  Live entertainment including a musical tribute in honor of R&B legends Michael Jackson and Teena Marie will take place on a main stage.

The Unity in the Community organization held various fundraisers throughout the year to raise money for the celebration. Philadelphia’s Power 99FM is a media partner and other community members have provided their support.
